Candid Conversations: From a Hiring Manager's Perspective

Candid Conversations: From a Hiring Manager's Perspective

About Expertise Contact

As part of the 1st season of our Mara Mentoring Volunteer Programme, we invited a panel of experienced hiring managers from a range of industries to share their life stories & career tips. Mentees also had the rare opportunity to receive personalised feedback on their CVs by the mentors & panelists.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  1. Be curious. Applicable to life, networking & interviews. Period.
  2. Facts tell, but stories sell. Share anecdotes of your experiences, but more importantly, the motivation behind them. No experience is too trivial (eg working in a coffee shop!), as long as they are well-explained on how they contribute to your capabilities, personality and character.
  3. 1st impression counts. With remote interviews becoming more common, small gestures (such as checking one's phone) get amplified. Good posture and a warm voice become even more key.
  4. Don't take rejections personally. It could be a blessing in disguise, or simply poor culture-fit or bad timing. However, be memorable & keep in touch with the interviewers - you never know what comes up!
